few weeks ago we learned that Coulson had reached an agreement with MaMook to finish operations in TFL 54 over the next two years.  We are now trying to ensure that we can operate in the remaining cutting permits in a logical and economical fashion.  The remaining timber we have to log in TFL 54 has value, but also comes with a very high cost to develop and log.  Coulson will be transferring all of the files and assets over to MaMook in March if all goes according to schedule.  This will include all future reforestation and silviculture responsibilities, so we will not have a planting program this spring.

Text Box: In the last edition of Log n’ Talk, I discussed the finding of a goshawk nest in one of our operating areas in TFL 54.  We have been able to get agreement with MaMook to engineer some new areas to replace the volume lost to habitat protection for the goshawk.   We hope to have that work completed in the next two weeks and our final cutting permit for the Matleset areas in TFL 54 submitted soon after.

In early March we will be working with a contractor to do a watershed assessment in the Toquart watershed as a first step in our next layout and logging program there.  Coulson has a legal requirement to have a professional hydrologist do this assessment every five to ten years. The assessment looks at past road building, logging and reforestation efforts. Our reforestation efforts have been good in Toquart and all areas are planted and greened up to a point where we believe the assessment will not show any issues with planning our next five year cut in the watershed.  We hope to engineer that for logging in 2011 and 2012.
