Aircrane and Coulson Manufacturing Storm Water sampling
Collection of storm water drainage samples at both the CML Klitsa mill yard and the Coulson Flying Tankers Sproat Lake Bomber base occurred during the November 2009 major rain storms and forwarded to Cantest Labs in Vancouver. The results were received and at CML we note that levels of iron and that turbidity were high – this was expected as cedar sawdust particles give off iron leachants and of course large amounts of dust and fine sawdust on the paved mill lumber yard surface was the cause of high turbidity. The Sproat Lake Bomber Base fuel tank farm and heli-pad refueling site sample results came back that the storm water was in compliance with the standard. As mentioned in an earlier Log n Talk storm water samples are required under the Waste Management Act of British Columbia.
We will need to conduct an additional storm water sample test at CML during the next rain storm. The Ministry samples are required to measure levels of anti-sap stain chemicals and hydro carbons that may be generated at these facilities and to enable us to identify and remedy any levels that exceed the standard.
ISO 14001 EMS Audit Schedule:
Our EMS internal audit for CML is scheduled for December 17/09 and Aviation will be done during Mid February 2010. The Timberland EMS audit is still planned for April 2010 Our internal audits will be carried out in house by Ron Sorensen and myself. We request that special waste, i.e. batteries and the contents of barrels, be disposed of as per the manual procedures and that all barrel containers are stored under cover
The following table sets out the planned EMS internal and external audit schedule.

During November, I was assigned the task of preparing Coulson Manufacturing Ltd. a PEFC (Annex 4) Chain of Custody manual and getting the company ready for the registration audit. PEFC stands for Pan European Forest Council which is a world wide forest certification organization. The company needs to have Chain of Custody certification in order to sell Certified Lumber produced by the mill and are sold as SFI or CSA certified wood. The manual was completed and key personnel were trained and the registration audit was conducted by QMI-SAI Global on December 4th, 2010. The auditor advised our COC system passed the audit requirements and the CML would receive its certificate the first week in January 2010. A big thanks goes out to John, Darren, Darlene, Karen and George for having their part of the Chain of Custody up to standard – Good job!!
Watch for the new PEFC Logo on lumber sales invoices and at the bottom of future issues of Log n Talk.
I understand our 3 S61 Helicopters are up and working in Australia. With respect to Australia work Visas, I have processed 6 visa applications for our S61 Pilots and Engineers The Australian Government is now issuing electronic visas linked to the persons passport. We have been issued 4 new visas and currently 2 are in Ottawa being processed by the Australian High Commission -- no problems so far. We now have 30 employees with approved Long Stay worker Visas.

Since Ken Matthews has taken on the Coulson Groups Forestry Manager’s duties, I have had a very much lighter workload (EMS and Visas) and accordingly much more time to do semi-retirement things (travel and fishing at my summer home).
I thank everyone for their help and I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
