Below you will find comments made by my father, Cliff Coulson, who in 1983 was the President of the Truck Loggers’ Association. 26 years ago, the theme of the convention was “Crossroads – Innovations for Recovery”; this is the beginning of his President’s Report.
The past two years have been very difficult years for many of our members.
During the past forty years we are all aware that our industry has had a history of cyclical highs and lows and it is my hope that we have started the long climb back to profitable times.
Although I do not wish to be pessimistic I would caution those who predict that a swift return to the profitable years of the 1970’s is imminent. It will need an upward trend in the pulp and paper sector, in order to bring a profitable price for wood chips – to again bring a demand for all species of logs…
As we can see from the above, the Forest Industry has always been a difficult business. The current transition, however, is much harsher - lumber manufacturing facilities will continue to downsize and log exports will become more prominent. The world recession is far from over, and stability is still not in our immediate horizon.
