e continue to continue in a climate of great uncertainty.  The impact of the financial breakdown late last year continues to filter down to our operations.  Banks are paying close attention to management strategies and decision-making during these challenging times.  We encourage “cheque exchanges” with customers who owe us money and to whom we owe money.

In our Gaming operations, the summer was extremely slow, not only on the Gaming side, but also on the Food & Beverage side.  We are seeing customers coming back, as we go into Fall and things tend to normalize in many households.

The paperback book “The Mighty Martin Mars – From 1945 US Navy Transport to 21st-Century Initial Attack FireFighting” co-written by Wayne Coulson & Steve Ginter is now available from Diane at Head Office.  The cost is $22.00, inclusive of taxes.  It is a historical book, which probably would make a great present.

Speaking of the Mars, it is still down in Southern California helping out with this state’s firefighting needs.  I am told that our base at Lake Elsinore is extremely well setup and professionally run.  We are very lucky to have such a dedicated group of people working down there representing Port Alberni, British Columbia and Canada.

I spent three days recently attending annually mandated professional development courses offered by the Certified General Accountants’ Association.  Thought I would share the following notes with you….

Tips to keep your mind sharp

    • When you meet someone, imagine the person’s name written on his or her forehead.  This way, you hear the name as well as see it, doubling the likelihood that you’ll remember it.
    • Talk aloud when you put down your keys or glasses, for instance, and want to remember the location.  Tell yourself exactly where you put them.  Later, you’ll remember hearing your voice.
    • Exercise your brain at what would otherwise by idle moments.  Memorize the licence plates of surrounding cars when struck in traffic.  Or start at 100 and count back by 7.
    • Vary your mental workout.  Unfamiliar situations and challenges stimulate the brain.  Try tying your shoelaces or brushing you teeth with your left hand if you’re right-handed.
    • Actively observe what you want to learn.  Create a mental snapshot of the information that you wish to remember, adding details to give this image personal meaning.  Link your mental shapshots together.
    • Minimize stress to maximize memory.  Prepare ahead, balance work and leisure, set realistic expectations, take relaxation breaks regularly.
    • Stimulate your brain to keep it fit:  Do crosswords and other kinds of puzzles, read or challenge yourself intellectually.
    • Start a healthful brain diet:  Drink six glasses of water each day, eat low-fat foods and plenty of fruits and vegetables, avoid friend foods and take the vitamins E and C.  If you smoke, quit.  It you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
