ogging in Clayoquot Sound is challenging and operations are held to a high standard. During late April and early May, our crews were operating adjacent to Sydney Inlet Provincial Park. This park is renowned world over for the scenic quality and protection of a coastal fjord.
Engineering crews, fallers and quality control folks worked closely with the helicopter yarding crew to ensure we were able to remove some very good timber and at the same time, maintain the natural appearance of the hillside. Everyone involved should be commended. At the end of the project, we were successful in achieving the objectives.
The photo below shows the hillside after logging. This is cut block HS120 in Sydney Inlet.
Zolie’s engineering crews will start layout work next week on the Matleset plateau. We hope to layout 25 to 50 000 m3 (depending on the markets). This timber would be conventional logging for the most part and would be hauled back to Rankin Cove for dumping and then barged around to Port Alberni. Our goal is to put together a program with this timber and timber from the approved areas we currently have in place, which would allow us to have an operation working out of Rankin Cove from late fall 2009 into the spring of 2010.
On the forestry side, Ron has finished up the 2009 planting program and has completed the forest fire fighting training and an internal audit on our EMS program. He is also working to get approval for our revised forest stewardship plan for TFL 54.
