Jan, 2009 Volume 09-141

By John Kuch, ManagerMill Report

CML has made it through the first month of 2009 - only 11 months to go. January has been interesting to say the least with tough markets, snow and the coldest temperatures in quite a few years.

We are trying some different products at CML / CSL and having success with them.

Pictured below, we are doing 2 grades of S4S decking which has been very well received in the market place and a rough 2 x 8 appearance which also has worked out. Both of these products have substantial sized orders.

We also have some other products and sizes we are planning to try. In times like these we have to be flexible and cut whatever the customer wants. This is probably the future so we need to get ready for it now.

FSC has been a big help and has allowed us to move a lot of our inventory.

Going forward there are still going to be more tough times in the lumber business with more companies disappearing. We aren’t going to be one of those. Resourceful, flexible companies like ours will always find the opportunities even when there don’t appear to be any. Until next month, please work safe and play safe.
