TOQUAHT FIRST NATION
ANNE MACK NAMED TO SUCCEED HEREDITARY CHIEF BERT MACK

Toquaht First Nation, “Tyee ha’wilth”, Hereditary Chief Bert Mack named Anne Mack as Hereditary Chief to succeed him as the next Hereditary Chief of the Toquaht First Nation.

On January 9th, 2009 I was honoured to have been invited to attend and witness the Toquaht First Nation official ceremony where Anne Mack was named to succeed Hereditary Chief Bert Mack as the next Hereditary Chief of the Toquaht First Nation.

The ceremony was held in Port Alberrni at the Hupacaseth House of Gathering. The hall was full to capacity. In attendance to witness the ceremony were many Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation Tyees and elected Chiefs as well as tribal delegations.

Hudson Webster Ahousaht Tyee ha’wilth conducted the official successor-ship ceremony in the Nuu-chah-nulth language and Cliff Atleo Sr. (Ahousaht elder) was the master of ceremonies and translated the ceremony into English for everyone to understand.

Chief Mack’s Toquaht name is “Tiitskeesup”. He had been chief of the Toquaht Nation for the past 68 years. Anne Mack youngest of his 3 daughters was named successor. Her Toquaht name is “Wiitsaskum”.
During the ceremony, there were several important traditional dances including a dance preformed for the special occasion by Chief Mack’s Grand Daughter and Great Grandson. The ceremony included official recognition of Hereditary Chiefs from each Tribe that were present to witness the event and a public declaration of support for Anne Mack was made by Toquaht Members and Kevin Mack Toquaht Nation’s second Chief. The event ended with a huge feast enjoyed by all.

Over the past 30 years, the Coulson Group has harvested timber from CFP’s Forest License within Toquaht Traditional Territory at Toquart Bay. Also during the past 12 years the company has partnered with Toquaht Enterprises Ltd which included a sawmill at the Macoah Reserve and joint venture logging operations under Echa-Peh Forest Resouces Ltd’s Forest Licenses at Toquart Bay and Cataract Lake.

I’m sure that Anne will continue the good work of her father and provide the necessary leadership that will enable the Toquaht people to prosper.
