To say 2008 has been a year of ups and downs would be a major understatement. The year started off promising with the mill running seven days a week for January and February. We were cutting our own wood during the week and Somass cants on the weekend. By March the Somass cant business started getting less and less and in April it was gone completely. Somass has reduced their operating level to two productions shifts with shingle cants on the graveyard and has eliminated our cant program.
Things at CSL started off well also but by the end of January, Western decided to keep all of their processing in-house and eliminated our Somass planer shifts. We were left in the position of having too much work for one shift and not enough work for two shifts. We have run since then with a part time second shift which is not the best for anyone.
Due to the downturn in the world economy lumber sales have been difficult since March. Fortunately, we have established ourselves as a quality producer of fine Western Red Cedar products and have FSC certification. This has allowed us to make sales even in these poor markets.
In spite of all the doom and gloom around us the CML crews have remained up beat and have improved their Safety performance over last year. Safety is always important but is even more so when we have to worry about things that are out of our control.
I wish I could say that the “Big turn around has arrived”, but it looks like the beginning of 2009 will be a continuation of 2008. Fortunately, there will still be some lumber moving and we have positioned ourselves to take advantage of any opportunities presented.
We can all take comfort that we work for the Coulson Group which has a dynamic leader – Wayne, and that when all the dust settles we will still be around.
I would like to wish everyone in the Coulson Group of Companies a Very Merry Christmas and All the Best for 2009.
I would like to thank the Coulson family for allowing me to have the privilege of managing Coulson Manufacturing and finally, I would like to thank everyone at Coulson Manufacturing for their hard work and dedication over the last difficult year.
Until next time please play and work safe.
REMEMBER SAFETY DOESN’T TAKE A HOLIDAY
During the festive season be sure to make it a safe one. Take time to think about driving safety concerns such as road conditions and designated drivers at events where drinking may occur. Take special precautions to keep your family safe from fire. Check your smoke alarms to be sure they are in good working order. Furnaces and wood stoves also need maintenance to avoid problems. Electrical extension cords and decorative lighting should be in good condition. Safety is no accident, at work or at home.
