Oct, 2008 Volume 08-139

By Gary Collinge, ManagerLog Harvesting

We have completed the winding down of operations, and are in a wait and see mode. With the US elections complete, the hand off to a new government near and the $.80 cent Canadian Dollar there are lots of reasons to expect change. As always Coulson is positioned to react to any opportunity.

Stewardson camp is now totally shut down. We have winterized the equipment left in Cataract, Toquart and Kennedy Flats. Coulson's 2009 logging plan for the first two quarters is ready. We have heli logging ready for April. Road building is poised to start soon in both Kennedy Flats and Stewardson. Any positive market moves will get something going.

Lumber markets continue to soften with no evidence of hitting bottom yet. The mill is operating below 50%. Mr. Kuch has been very inventive keeping it up running at any level.

Our final 2 barge moves out of Stewardson have been of great interest due to our previous 2 barges having 30 - 40% bundle failure which resulted in a large claim from our customer. I attended the loading and dumping of the Port Alberni barge which was successful. The customer attended the loading of the Vancouver barge on Wednesday, and I attended the dumping and breakdown of the Vancouver barge, Thursday night and Friday. The dump results aren't in yet but things were better than the previous Vancouver load.

As with all things you can always find room to improve. The Alberni barge which was heavy to utility and shingle had many irregular bundles that accounted for some bundle failure and the gang bundles that came apart from being too loose. The mill boom crew estimates a 4% failure on the first barge. The Vancouver barge bundle failure number isn't in yet but I will talk about it in the next Log N Talk.

Pilgrim Film and Television, with the assistance of the Coulson logging crew, produced a documentary on logging in B.C to be aired November 19th. The following note was sent to me and Susan Merivirta.

Dear Gary & Susan:

I hope you are well! Just wanted to let you know your episode is scheduled to air November 19th, 2008 on Discovery Channel. Check your local listings for times. The episode is looking great by the way, I think you'll be very happy with it!! Thanks again for your wonderful hospitality, the crew certainly had an experience of a lifetime and we at the office appreciate your time, effort and generosity!
