April, 2008 Volume 08-134

By John Kuch, ManagerMill Report

So far this year it doesn't feel as though spring has arrived let alone May. Hopefully, the weather will warm up and our loggers can get on a normal pace.

At CML we are still running the mill on a 2 shift basis and have restarted the 2nd shift at the planer. The mill has been cutting cedar from BP21 delivered by barge from a water drop. Unfortunately, there was some helicopter problems and we had to go to our hemlock cut early.

All around us we are hearing about the doom and gloom of the forest industry with Western Forest Products curtailing logging, Timberwest closing their Elk falls mill, the bankruptcy of Pope and Talbot and curtailments at Catalyst. We are still managing to hold our own but we definitely have to work harder to hang on to our share of the markets.

Everyone working at CML can do things to improve our chances of weathering this almost perfect storm. The number one thing is to work safely, accidents can be a killer both literally and figuratively. If we don't; people are injured or worse. Each accident costs a lot of money.

Waste is expensive - from throwing out good gloves to wasting lath or dunnage; it all adds up and we can all work at saving money.

There are lots of other things we can do to cut costs, save money, or improve efficiency. Anyone who has suggestions please bring them forward. The jobs we are protecting are our own.

As mentioned earlier CSL has gone back to 2 shifts with some returning employees as well as some new hires. Welcome to new hires or welcome back to returning employees and please everyone look out for our new people.

Until next month please work safe and play safe.

Safe Re-fueling Rules

Rules # 1-#3 are probably not big news but check out #4

  • Turn off vehicle engine
  • Don't smoke
  • Don't use your cell phone (leave it inside the vehicle or turn it off)
  • Don't re-enter your vehicle during re-fueling.

Why #4? The culprit is static electricity. It appears that some people return to their vehicle during the re-fueling process and then return to the nozzle once the tank is full. When they pull the nozzle out, a fire starts as a result of static electricity igniting gas vapours. The best rule of thumb is to NEVER return to your vehicle while re-fueling. If you must return to your vehicle while the gas is pumping, ensure that when you get out, you close the door while TOUCHING THE METAL before you pull the gas nozzle out in order to discharge the static from your body.
