New Forestry Manger

It has been very enjoyable to meet a number of you over the past few weeks. I would like to thank everyone for a nice welcome and for your assistance in helping me to understand the Coulson Group.

Much of my initial focus has been on ensuring we have a strong strategic plan with TFL 54 in Clayoquot Sound. In future issues of this newsletter I will discuss the role of Coulson Forest Products in the TFL and our association with Ma-Mook Natural Resources Ltd. Operating in Clayoquot Sound with our First Nations partners provides a huge opportunity for the company to access a supply of logs for the mill and to participate in a certification system which should see logs and lumber from Clayoquot Sound be in high demand and bring in top value in any market. On the other side of the equation, operating in Clayoquot Sound is high cost, complicated, and often controversial and not without some set backs.

Toquart and Cataract
Engineering work is completed in these areas for the current harvesting programs. We expect to begin work on planning and layout of new roads and cut blocks this fall for harvest in 2010 and later years. Tree planting, silvicultural surveys and waste assessments will continue in these areas as current logging is completed.
Kennedy Lake Area TFL 54
Zolie has several new cut blocks engineered in this area. We are currently working with the Tla-o-quiaht and Ucluelet First Nations on final cut block layout and will be submitting road and cutting permit applications to the Ministry of Forests and Range in the next few weeks. Our target in this area is approximately 100 000 cubic meters over the next eighteen months. Ron will be planting the cut blocks harvested last year near the Ucluelet/Tofino junction over the next few weeks.
Stewardson /Hesquiaht Area of TFL 54
This area is accessible only by air or by boat from Tofino and is approximately 45 kilometers northwest of Tofino. Zolie has the majority of the new roads engineered and approved in road permits. One cutting permit is approved. Several more cutting permits will be applied for over the next few months to complete our harvest program of nearly 200 000 cubic meters in this area over the next 18 months. Logs should start moving by May 15.
Bedwell Sound, Cypre River and Fortune Channel TFL 54
These areas are also accessible by water or air and are 15 to 25 kilometers from Tofino. Engineering crews are just beginning to work on locating additional volume for our 2008/09 program. We are hoping to gain approval for another 100 000m³ of volume in these areas before September of 2008.

Forest Fire Suppression - Drill/Practice Protocol

Objective:

  • Hands on simulated fire attack to provide experience to crews and test fire suppression emergency response procedures.

Schedule:

  • Fire drills shall be conducted by all logging and road construction crews at:
  • The start of fire season.
  • AGAIN when the fire danger reaches moderate, and monthly during moderate and high fire danger conditions.
  • Note: Once the fire danger exceeds moderate for 7 days the fire water tank trucks & fire pumps are to be started and run for 5 minutes on a weekly basis. Tests must be recorded in the equipment log book.

Procedures:

  • Supervisor/Charge-hand to:
  • Preselect a location and simulate a fire by hanging ribbon to mark the perimeter of a mock fire.
  • Alert crew that a fire drill/practice is underway and that they have 8 minutes to get organized.
  • Get organized through the charge-hand taking charge, review safety concerns and the crew being assigned to set up pump, lay hose, work on fire with hand tools and back tank pumps
  • Put men on the fire with hand tank pump and hand tools.
  • Setup a fire pump, layout hose and get water to the fire edge.
  • Charge-hand/supervisor to time how long it takes to get water to fire.
  • Debrief crew on success or problems and how improvements can be made.
  • Complete fire practice record and forward the completed record to the EMS clerk.
