An agreement has been reached with Iisaak to amend Iisaak’s TFL57 Forest Stewardship Plan to include all of MaMook Coulson’s TFL54 operating area in Clayoquot Sound. Ron Sorensen will be working with Derek Drake of Iisaak to amend their approved F.S.P. The amendment process is expected to be completed in 3 to 4 months with District Manager approval by the end of November of this year. The Iisaak amended plan will become a joint plan valid for a 5 year period of 2007 through 2011 and will include all operations of TFL54 within the land area covered by the Clayoquot Sound land use decision. MaMook Coulson does have an approved FSP for the portions of TFL 54 outside Clayoquot Sound. The FSP for these areas is the Arrowsmith TSA Multi Licensee F.S.P.
The first Cutting Permit for the TFL54 has been approved by the Ministry of Forest and Range. CP115 located at Lost Shoe Creek near the highway junction to Ucluelet and Tofino contains second growth Hembal with a minor component of Douglas Fir and Cedar. The Douglas Fir is considered ecologically "offsite" as the Tofino-Kennedy Lake Flats is a very wet maritime Eco-system where Douglas Fir does not grow quality timber. These trees were planted during the 1950 decade when the science of tree "provence" was in its infancy and the forest industry planted preferred species for value not ecological criteria. During the late 1970's the forest service set out tree ecology criteria requiring that logged areas must be replanted with ecological suite tree species similar to what grew on the site before (Provenance). Therefore, Douglas Fir cannot be planted on an "offsite" Eco-system.
Coulson Manufacturing Ltd. had their re- registration Chain of Custody audit completed on June 14, 2007. I'm pleased to advise that the auditor confirmed that once again our Chain of Custody procedure meets the "FSC" Standard and a new certification will be issued. As our plans are to have the TFL54 Forests "FSC" certified and for CML to manufacture and market "FSC:" certified timber world wide, this certification is critical to the program.
Congratulations to Darlene Kemps, Darren Van Dyk and John Kuch for having everything in order!
Basic Fire Suppression and Safety training has been given to over 50 logging and road crew personnel. One more course is scheduled for the last week of June for our TFL54 logging and road crews.
Remember summer is here - No smoking in the woods or lunch fires. Make sure you know the location of the fire tools and that the fire tools are only used for fire emergency.
